After the Miami Fusion folded after the 2001 season and an expansion bid led by Miami-based Bolivian telecom entrepreneur Marcelo Claure and FC Barcelona failed in 2009, MLS commissioner Don Garber confirmed the league’s renewed interest in adding a franchise to Miami in November 2012.

Four years after the ownership first declared its intent to pursue a franchise, the Miami Beckham United group—which includes Beckham, Claure, Fuller, Masayoshi Son [founder and CEO of SoftBank and Jorge
and José Mas, the Miami-based leaders of telecommunications and construction company MasTec) was awarded the twenty-fifth MLS franchise and was scheduled to launch in the 2020 season.
The announcement was a part of a bigger MLS expansion that would see the league add 30 teams overall by the year 2020. Since Beckham first declared in 2014 that he planned to establish a team in Miami, Orlando City, New York City FC, Atlanta United, Minnesota United, Los Angeles FC, and FC Cincinnati have all started playing in the Major League Soccer. As of August 4, Paul McDonough was employed as the sporting director. Later, the ownership group of the team changed its name to Miami Freedom Park LLC. On September 5, 2018, they made Inter Miami CF, or Club International de football Miami, the club’s official name.

The Mas brothers completed a buyout to oust Claure and Son as the team’s majority owners in 2021. Inter Miami CF, owner Jorge Mas, and former sporting director Paul McDonough were all fined by Major League Soccer (MLS) on May 28, 2021, for breaking roster regulations in the previous season. In order to adhere to salary limit regulations and avoid using its three Designated Player slots, the club signed Blaise Matuidi and Andrés Reyes using targeted allocation money (TAM), although it was later determined that they had spent more than the TAM cap of $1.61 million per player. MLS fined the team $2 million, reduced its allocation for the 2022 and 2023 seasons by $2.27 million, suspended McDonough, fined Mas $250,000.
from league operations for one year. the season’s finish in 2022.

Inter Miami made the announcement that Neville has left the team on June 1st, 2023. The team was then playing in the Eastern Conference’s basement. Beckham continued, “We sometimes have to make the hardest choices in this game, and regretfully, we feel the time is ripe to make a change.
On that day, assistant coach Javier Morales took over as interim head coach. Seven-time winner of the Ballon d’Or Lionel Messi made the announcement four days after leaving Paris Saint-Germain and declining offers to play for Al-Hilal and FC Barcelona. On July 15, 2023, Messi signed a deal as a Designated Player, making him a member of the squad through the 2025 MLS season. Tata Martino, an Argentine and former manager of Barcelona, was named the club’s head coach on June 28. He moved to Miami the following month. At an unveiling ceremony on July 16, Messi and former teammate Sergio Busquets of Barcelona were officially welcomed to the squad. Jordi Alba, another one of his former Barcelona colleagues, joined Inter Miami five days later.
